The club's only success in the Inter-continental Cup (also known as the World Club Cup or Toyota Cup) was in 1999, following the treble winning season. Sir Alex Ferguson led Manchester United to victory against Brazilian side, Palmeiras, in Tokyo, Japan.

They followed this with further global honours in 2008, by winning the FIFA Club World Cup, the first British team to do so. Again, this was under the leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson, with Manchester United securing the trophy by beating Ecuadorian side, LDU Quito, in Yokohama, Japan.
