Manchester United were the first English team to win the European Cup. They did so in 1968 under the management of Sir Matt Busby, 10 years on from the tragic events in Munich. The win was the pinnacle of Sir Matt's reign at Old Trafford and he subsequently resigned from the club in 1969.

It wasn't until 1991 that Manchester United enjoyed further European success by winning the European Cup Winners Cup. Under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson, this victory was to be the start of a special period in the club's history. The Ferguson years saw Manchester United reach a further three European Cup (Champion's League) Finals, winning the cup in 1999 and 2008 respectively. The victory in 1999 was particularly special, as it capped an unprecedented treble session for the club (with Premier League and FA Cup victories in the same year). It also reinforced the 'never give up' attitude that Sir Alex instilled in his teams; with two goals coming in stoppage time against Barcelona in the 1999 final. What a game that was!

The club's most recent European success (winning the Europa League) came under the reign of Jose Mourinho in 2017, a victory all the more poignant, as the match was played just 2 days after a devastating terrorist attack on the city of Manchester.
