Manchester United were the first English team to win the European Cup. They did so in 1968 under the management of Sir Matt Busby, 10 years on from the tragic events in Munich.

It wasn’t until 1991 that Manchester United enjoyed further European success by winning the European Cup Winners Cup. Under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson, this victory was to be the start of a special period in the club’s history. The Ferguson years saw Manchester United reach a further three European Cup Finals, winning the cup in 1999 and 2008 respectively. The victory in 1999 was particularly special, as it capped an unprecedented treble session for the club.

Fans had to wait almost 10 years before the next European crown - this time the UEFA Europa League. José Mourinho's team won the trophy just two days after the devastating terrorist attack at the Manchester Arena, completing a 'full set' of European trophies for the club and uniting a City in mourning.
